We were traveling east on I-90 from Seattle to Spokane in the left (inside) lane @ 80 MPH coming up alongside an 18 wheeler when it started to enter our lane. Jamie was driving, and I was in the back seat in between the boys. She swerved left to avoid a collision, and when she went to recover, she lost control.

We went left then right, and when we went left again, I could tell that each swerve was getting bigger than the last. I said “This is on good”, and Jamie was starting to panic. “Oh my God, Oh my God” she said with a tone of terror as she tried to recover from here second left hand swerve. She turned back to the right to stay on the road, and you could feel the rear tires fish tailing. The thought flashed through Jamie’s mind “We might die… this could be it…”, all I could think was “we’re going to flip”.

Then we collided with the semi. We were in the 1999 Land Rover Discovery II (thank God). This thing is built like a tank. We connected at around a 45 degree angle, and the front end hit the front set of trailer tires, and the front passenger window struck the bottom of the semi trailer. Thank God, no one was in the front passenger seat.

On impact, the hood of the Rover flipped up to cover the windshield completely, and the throttle stuck. We fish tailed back to the left, and the rear passenger window struck the semi trailer and burst open. At this point, I assume the semi is about half way in our lane.

We headed off the road and into the median. The median was about 20 yards wide and a big ditch. We barreled down the median without slowing, and Jamie says she thinks she let go of the wheel and closed her eyes in panic. Carrie underwood wasn’t playing, but I think this is where Jesus took the wheel. We can see nothing in front of us, and having her foot off the gas is not slowing the car because the throttle is stuck.

I look out the right rear passenger window just before we crossed both lanes of oncoming traffic to see wide open freeway for a long way. We fly right up and over the two lane highway, and continue through a farmer’s fence and out about 100 yards into his field. As we entered the fields I start telling Jamie to hit the brakes, as it feels far overdue. A combination of the stuck throttle and a state of panic caused this seeming miscalculation, but very likely perfect maneuvering on Jamie’s part.

When the car finally stops all attention turns to the boys. Are hey all right? Jamie puts the car in park, but it continues to rev up because of the throttle issue. We get the boys out of the car, and Jamie is balling saying “I’ m so sorry, I’m so sorry…” she’s shaking in panic and remorse. The boys are both screaming out of fear from what happened, and fear of why mommy is so scared. The car is starting to smoke, so I go in and turn off the ignition. The boys are both fine, not a scratch on them, but Bennett repeatedly says “scared. scared.” Now after the accident, Bennett says “truck, boom, mommy cries. scared. scared.” If you’re looking for the short version, that’s it.

As we collect ourselves, gather the family together, and pray thanking Jesus for saving our lives, we see two patrol cars already on the scene. Granted, we’re 100 yards off the opposite side of the freeway from the collision, but we can see them off in the distance. The semi, and two witnesses have stopped on the other side. Could God provide more fully and promptly? The officer told us later that they are usually an hour away from these things. The officer is walking out into field to meet us, picking up our items that have flown from the rear window.. He lets us know that he is wearing a microphone, and everything is being recorded.

After finding out that Jamie was driving, he takes here aside to get her side of the story. He shortly after tells us that they have already place the fault on the semi truck driver. We gather the things we think we will need for the next few hours and head back to the under cover Charger cop car. We all sit in the back seat, which is no treat. The seats are hard plastic and molded to fit a full size man with his hands behind his back. The truck driver came over and apologized, and told us that he had just lost a grandson in a tone that suggested, he couldn’t take the idea of being at fault for our little ones getting hurt. He seemed very relieved that they were okay.

We tried to get ahold of family who were out at Loon Lake (which was where we were headed), but nobody answered… We called mom and Bill’s cell phone, no answer. We called Daniel’s cell phone, no answer. I called my cousin Michelle who was in Spokane to try and get Jonathan’s phone number to try and get ahold of him, but she didn’t have it either. I called information, got Uncle Dave’s phone number, and got ahold of Beth. Beth ended up getting ahold of uncle Mike who headed out from Spokane to meet us.

The cop called a tow truck who made it out there very quickly. We weren’t sure how we would get the car out of the field, because we figured it was not drivable. Both cops and the tow truck driver were saying they’d never seen a vehicle so far off the road after an accident. The tow truck driver ended up going out and starting it up and backing out of the field. He’s the one who alerted us to the fact that the throttle was stuck, because he was fighting it the whole time.

The cops took us to a little restaurant in Sprague called The Viking. We just had the boys in our laps in the back seat. The tow truck followed us there so we could get the rest of our things. We unloaded all we thought would fit in Mike’s car and took it into the restaurant. Mike showed up in about 30 minutes, and gave us a ride back to his house in Spokane.

Mom and Bill met us there and we headed to the ER to get everyone checked out. No one was in pain or having obvious injuries, but we wanted to error on the safe side. Everybody checked out fine. Another minor miracle is getting in and out of the ER within 1 hour. Jamie got prescribed some pain killers and muscle relaxants, and I got prescribed some muscle relaxants.

We actually enjoyed our weekend at the lake cabin and the boys were able to play in the water and sand. Jamie got tighter and more sore each day, but was able to enjoy herself as well. The worst noticeable injuries so far is a bruise on Jamie’s leg and knee.

The Miracles:

Not flipping in a Land Rover swerving @ 80 MPH

Hitting no obstructions, cliffs, or drop-offs as we crossed the median and field. Go 1 mile in either direction, and you will see cliffs, large rocks, and drop-offs.

Wide open lanes of oncoming traffic. Hindsight haunts me on this one of what could have been.

Two cops on the scene by the time we got out of our cars

Two witnesses stopping and giving testimonies

Getting in and out of the ER in 1 hour

Gods hand in saving our lives is un-deniable, and we thank him, praise him, and trust him fully with our lives. We belong to him, and he has a purpose for our lives. Praise God for his grace and protection.

Ethan James Coyne entered the world at 11:30 am on February 28th at 7 lbs and 4 onces and 19″ long. Jamie won the bet, but I think she had the unfair advantage of feeling the weight… I had guessed 7-5, Chelsey had 7-7, and Kay had 7-0. As her prize, we decided that Jamie gets to keep the child!

We just squeaked out of having a leap year baby! Jamie was bound and determined to have this baby as soon as she knew he was fully developed. Following the trend of our first born, we looked at 37 weeks as our due date. Especially considering Jamie’s 6 weeks of preceding bed rest. This labor was eerily similar to Bennett’s.

Jamie started having contractions at 11:45 on February 27, 2008. We were worried that this labor could move at a much faster rate based on second labors of people we know (Cassi), so we didn’t take any chances. Jamie timed her contractions until they we one minute long and 5 minutes apart. At 1:30 am, we went in. Jamie had a doctors appointment earlier that day, and had been measured at 3.5 cm dilated. When she got measured in Triage, she measured 3 cm… less than encouraging progress.

They gave us the option to take a shot to knock Jamie out for a few hours so she could go home and sleep out the early labor, or to (as Animal prescribes!) walk it out. My warrior wife opted to walk it out. She did not want to go home. After six weeks of bed rest, and pushing out a large headed 7 lb 8 oz baby at 37 weeks 15 months ago, show wanted to have this baby ASAP!

The supportive husband I am immediately got coffee and pizza (both of which she was prohibited…). She hadn’t planned or dressed for this so she began her multiple hour baby march wearing UGGs. After one hour, she was checked as making minimal progress to 4 cm. They said to try another hour, because we were progressing enough that they didn’t want to send us home, but not enough to admit us. She trudged another hour and made it to the magical 5 cm!At 5 am, we moved to a birthing suit, got the epidural, and watched the hardest contractions of labor go by on a printed graph. Jamie put on her samurai headband (wet cloth), and progressed steadily over the next 6 hours. At 11:00, the nurse did another check and called the doctor about getting her in to deliver. Dr Hannon suggested Jamie “labor down” which is a technical term for do nothing.

Hannon made it into the room at 11:25 am, and when she went to do her cervical check on Jamie she said “he has dark hair”… The baby was ready to come! 4 minutes, 2 contractions, and 4 pushes later, Hannon says to Jamie “reach down between your legs”. “What?” asked Jamie… “Reach between your legs and pull your son up to you chest!” said Hannon, and Jamie pulled Ethan out of herself and into the world!!! How amazing is that? He let out a little cry, but was so peaceful from the start, and that continues into the present. Just a very peaceful, sweet, happy boy just like his older brother. He latched on and had a great first feeding.

Bennett made it in at 2 pm to meet his brother for the first time. He wasn’t sure what to think, but was very happy to see his parents who mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the night and left him with his aunt Chelsey and uncle Colin. He gave Ethan a kiss before he left, and we can’t wait for them to spend more time together.

Thank you Jesus for what an incredible blessing! For health, competent staff, a great facility for this experience, and for a fantastic support group of family and friends who we love so much. Thanks to Kay for standing by us through the night. Thanks to Colin and Chelsey for staying with Bennett through the night. Thanks to Marianne for bringing Bennett in to meet his brother and watching him for the next night. Thanks Alexis for helping out wherever needed and being there for the birth. Thanks ahead of time for all of you that we love who will be supporting us in the weeks to come.

20 - 6 at the end of the first half. Team A brought it back to 20-20 at the beginning of the second half. A few key turnovers resulted in the heavily lopsided final outcome.

Toney Hetherington
Two TD catches and some great DB work

Gabe Coyne
QB with no greater than 20 yards running this game! Around 8 TD passes. 1 for 4 on interceptions he should have had. 3 turned out to be blocks. One sweet one where the ball was barely touched, but eno

Kyle Harrison
Never ran a rout he was told to, but had a few good catches, including the last touchdown.

Erik Skoor

Ian Wright
The all star was pretty much silenced on offense besides one big catch that was out of bounds… he mad some great defensive plays, and had some good runs out of the backfield.

Taylor Naten
Played line, and had some sweet catches and runs.

Jesse Salo
Played lineman, and had some great catches on release routs as well as the final catch of the game on a flyers up extra point.

Mark Sowers
Gave a guy a concusion on the first play…

Collin Duff
One beautiful corner rout for a touchdown early in the game, and an equally beautiful pick from the linebacker position late in the game.

Jeff VanderGiessen
Played line, and caught about 5 passes on release routes. One great run where he plowed right over two guys!

On Friday (November 24 - when the Chicken Bowl was out of the way), Jamie and I started doing everything we could to help the baby move towards delivery. We joined the shopping craze and walked around the mall all day. We got our Christmas tree, some Christmas gift ideas, and a new digital camera to start capturing Bennett’s life with right from the beginning.
When they got to the point that they were painful, we called our doctor, and she told us to com in (2:00 AM). We gathered all the things we thought we’d need to survive living at the hospital for 2 days, called Jamie’s mom, and headed to the hospital.Jamie’s mother, brother, and sister accompanied us to the hospital, and through the birth.Jamie’s brother Colin strategically positioned himself in the corner of the room so he only had a limited angle on what was happening. My sister was staying up late knitting Bennett a baby blanket knowing he was coming any day. As she finished it at 2:30 AM, and said “Now Bennett can come”, Jamie’s water broke as we walked into the emergency room at Swedish Hospital on Capitol Hill.Jamie had been 3 cm dilated for two weeks now, and was 5 cm dilated the first time we got checked at the hospital. We were moved into a birthing sweet right away, and Jamie’s tentative plans for a natural birth turned into “Get me an epidural ASAP”. After she got her epidural, life was all good, and we just watched the contraction happen on a printout instead of in Jamie’s painful expressions.

Jamie was amazing and pushed so hard for the 1.5 hours of active labor. She continues to blow my mind with her hard work and dedication with feeding, patience, and sleep deprivation. She shows how madly in love she is with her new little boy.

We’ve gotten about three hours of sleep in the last three days, but now we’re home with our new wonderful son. God continues to bless us beyond our imagination. We are so grateful for all he has given.
